AD Ports and NYU Abu Dhabi partner on smart port calls
AD Ports Group is entering a partnership and research collaboration agreement with the NYU Abu Dhabi university to build and pilot a high-fidelity intelligence engine that is expected to lead to smarter port operations.
The initiative will utilise stochastic models and spatial intelligence to support vessel arrival predictions, berth allocation and environmental insights, enabling more efficient and sustainable port calls. The engine is designed to serve as a sophisticated decision-support layer for human operators.
According to AD Ports, in an industry where global berth waiting times often stretch into multiple days at anchorage, the opportunity to improve the precision of port call planning is significant. The high-fidelity intelligence engine aims to reduce port call uncertainty and enhance port operations by enabling smarter port calls that can effectively unlock more capacity without physical expansion.
Furthermore, AD Ports points out, depending on the vessel type, better aligning arrival times with berth allocation can reduce idle time and save fuel burn considerably, thereby minimising environmental harm.
NYU Abu Dhabi brings to the table the high level analytical capabilities and advanced research capabilities needed for high-fidelity modelling, while AD Ports Group will support the initiative by providing secure access to relevant operational information. The company has also promised to enable controlled, real-world pilots to take place across a number of terminals and trade lanes, helping transition the high-fidelity engine from theory into a deliverable, field-tested solution.
