Abu Dhabi Ports has moved all of the emirate’s ro-ro cargo to the new Khalifa Port ro-ro hub.
In recent times, Abu Dhabi’s ro-ro volumes have increased significantly. Last year the emirate’s ports handled over 100,000 ro-ro units for the first time, 19% up on 2013 levels. “As the UAE is a growing market for the automotive sector, our business strategy is to support this growth by developing and enhancing Abu Dhabi’s port infrastructure, to build this sustainable industry for the Emirate’s future prosperity,” says Capt. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, chief executive, Abu Dhabi Ports.
Khalifa Port offers additional berthing facilities and an increased throughput capacity, allowing new business to be catered for. The new ro-ro hub can handle around 360,000 units a year, compared with 132,000 units at Zayed port and there is scope to increase this still further to around 500,000 units a year.
Furthermore, Khalifa Port is capable of handling up to four of the largest ro-ro vessels at a time, double the number that Zayed Port could accommodate, significantly boosting turnaround times and increasing the supply chain efficiencies for the shipping lines. “This is a major advantage for carriers looking to reduce voyage times and enhance their overall network coverage in the region using hub and spoke model,” says Captain Shamisi.
