Noboru Ueda, chairman and president of ClassNK, was a VIP attendee at the delivery ceremony for the Al Yarmouk, constructed at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and delivered to Kuwait Oil Tanker Co (KOTC) in Korea towards the end of August. The 317,300 dwt VLCC was built under ClassNK Rules and Regulations and in line with KOTC’s strict standards on safety and environmental performance.
During the construction phase, ClassNK provided extensive professional and technical services for successful completion of the vessel. ClassNK will also continue to provide classification services for the Al Yarmouk which is the third in a series of four new VLCCs to be built at DSME, while it is in service. The fourth vessel, Al Kout, is expected to be delivered towards the end of October 2014.
The completion of the Al Yarmouk brings the total number of tankers operated by KOTC to 28, which will rise to 30 by the end of the year. The hull form of the new vessel has been enhanced and designed to optimize the water flow to the propeller, reducing hydro-friction which in turn reduces fuel consumption and ultimately harmful emissions. In addition it is equipped with latest generation Tier II energy saving engines that are designed to reduce CO2 and NOx emissions, with the added feature of using low sulphur fuels such as Marine Gas Oil (MGO) to reduce SOx emissions. KOTC has also taken the initiative of installing Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS) in advance of international requirements.
