Qatar shipyard, N-KOM, has signed a landmark agreement with HeLenGi Engineering for the retrofit of a number of Greek ferries as part of the Poseidon-Med project, which aims to develop an LNG bunkering network in the Mediterranean and Adriatic. The LNG will be sourced from Qatar, and the project will ensure that LNG can be adopted as a marine fuel for shipping operations in this region, enhancing its competitiveness, as well as making it more environmentally friendly.
N-KOM reports a busy first half of 2014, with a particularly notable increase in the number of dredgers calling at the yard for repairs. This includes work for new clients National Petroleum Construction Company and Middle East Dredging Company (Medco). Repairs have also been carried out on LNG carriers for STASCo, MOL and NYK and an LPG tanker for Qatar Shipping. Offshore vessels docked include Seacor’s supply vessel Seacor Leopard, Icon Offshore’s Omni Tigris and Bourbon Offshore’s Bourbon Liberty.
N-KOM has also carried out repairs on its first jack-up rig from Shell Drilling. High Island VII underwent a 12-day repair at the yard, which has also completed extensive repair and refurbishment work to Gulf Drilling International’s jack-up rig, Msheireb, the second project of this type carried out for the company. With the completion of High Island VII and Msheireb, N-KOM has now completed repairs on more than 20 offshore jack-up rigs over the past three years.
