Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT), the manager and operator of the Khalifa port container terminal, has signed a contract with petrochemicals and plastics firm Borouge, as a result of which ADT will design, construct and operate a new, high-tech packaging facility for the company’s export shipments within the port. Khalifa port is already the main UAE gateway for Borouge products to customers worldwide. The advanced packing solution that ADT is going to provide is expected to further strengthen Borouge’s supply chain capabilities and support export growth. The new packing centre, which will complement existing facilities in the UAE, China and Singapore, is to be completed in early 2015 and will have an annual capacity of around 385,000 tonnes. In another boost for the port, Spinneys, a leading UAE supermarket chain, has started work on a new cold storage and distribution centre at the Khalifa Industrial Zone (Kizad). The centre, also expected to be operational in early 2015, is being built on a 382,905ft2 site. According to Jannie Holtzhausen, chief executive of Spinneys Dubai, “Being located in Kizad will give us the opportunity to further grow our business by enabling us to get our products from international markets faster and more efficiently. It is the mixture of low operating costs, an ease of doing business climate and excellent market access through the adjacent Khalifa port that makes Kizad a highly attractive destination from which we will be able to serve both urban and rural markets very effectively.”
