Oman to end Salalah Port Services concession in November 2028
Salalah Port Services (SPS) has confirmed that it has received formal notification from Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology indicating that its existing concession agreement for the operation of facilities in Salalah port will not be extended beyond its contractual expiry date of 1st November 2028. It states that the decision not to extend the concession agreements is “final and unconditional.”
No indication has yet been made as to who will take over the operation of the port, one of the region’s largest container transhipment hubs and bulk cargo export facilities, nor the process for making that transition. A statement from SPS indicated that,” The Board of Directors will consider the notification and assess its implications and potential impact on the company. The company will also engage with the relevant stakeholders as appropriate and will keep the market updated on any material developments in accordance with applicable disclosure requirements.”
SPS, in which APM Terminals is the biggest single shareholder, has operated container and general cargo terminals in the port of Salalah since they opened in November 1998. The company has recently completed a major upgrade of container facilities in the port, including infrastructure improvements and the acquisition of new container handling equipment.
