APM Terminals breaks ground on Laldia terminal in Bangladesh
APM Terminals has officially started work on the new APM Terminals Laldia facility in Chattogram, Bangladesh, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by government leaders from Bangladesh and Denmark, as well as senior executives from key stakeholders. The US$ 550 million project is the result of a governmental partnership between Bangladesh and Denmark, under which Bangladesh invited Denmark to bring the expertise and investment of its shipping and logistics companies to modernise the country’s critical trade infrastructure.
APM Terminals Laldia is being delivered together with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and local partner QNS Container Services. The facility will be fully designed, financed, built and operated by APM Terminals and its partners, using a public-private sector model that is being employed for the first time in Bangladesh’s port sector.
Once it its operational in 2030, the terminal will be able to handle over 800,000 TEU a year, easing congestion at the Port of Chattogram and enabling it to handle container vessels up to 6000 TEU size, as the result of deeper draft access. This is more than double the maximum vessel size that can currently be accommodated at the Bangladeshi port.
The Laldia terminal is also designed to be one of Bangladesh’s first energy-efficient, low-emission terminals. Electrified cargo handling equipment, solar power installations and shore-power-ready systems will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution, benefitting both employees and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), commented: “Laldia Container Terminal marks a historic new chapter for Chattogram Port and Bangladesh’s maritime sector. As Bangladesh’s first green port being developed under the landlord port model through a public-private partnership, it sets a new benchmark for sustainable and internationally competitive port development.”
