Westwell delivers electric terminal tractors with swappable batteries
One of the priorities for ports and terminal operators in the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent region is the reduction of carbon footprint, and increased operational efficiency, through adopting intelligent, electrically powered container handling equipment. One of the pioneers in developing technology of this type is AI-driven systems provider, Westwell, continues to achieve success with some innovative solutions, which it is currently marketing worldwide, including the region.
In a recent project that will generate considerable interest across the ports sector, Westwell has supplied a fleet of 60 Electric Terminal Tractors (E-TTs) with a Swappable Battery System (SBS), together with a Battery Swapping Station (BSS), to Westports Malaysia, one of the South East Asian country’s leading container terminals. These vehicles have now entered the commissioning and operational integration phase.
The arrival of the E-TTs, followed by the immediate start of charging and on-site commissioning, marks an important milestone in terms of the global implementation of electrically powered landside container handling systems. Once deployed, the E-Truck fleet is also expected to significantly improve terminal operating efficiency, reduce operating costs associated with high fuel prices and enhance driver comfort and occupational well-being.
To support continuous terminal operations, the fleet will be paired with Westwell’s PowerOnair intelligent battery swapping system, designed to enable fully automated battery replacement in approximately five minutes. The vehicles have also undergone enhanced anti-corrosion and salt-spray protection, allowing reliable operation in Malaysia’s tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures, heavy rainfall and coastal humidity.
