DP World to expand Fujairah port capacity
Reflecting the UAE’s emerging dual coast strategy, to avoid over dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, DP World has reached an agreement in principle with the Fujairah Ports Authority to sign a 50-year concession to develop two new terminals on the UAE’s east coast. The new Al Rugaylat container and multi-purpose terminal and the Dibba General Cargo terminal will expand DP World’s UAE port capacity while creating greater flexibility for customers, reducing dependency on port calls inside the Gulf.
The development of the two new terminals will be delivered in phases, with construction expected to take approximately 24 to 30 months from commencement.
The project will establish a new deep water container facility, Al Rugaylat, in Fujairah, which will be capable of handling the latest generation of large container vessels. The terminal will have an annual container throughput capacity of around 2.5 million TEU and will also be able to handle 1.7 million tonnes of general cargo and 190,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEU) a year. Additionally, the Dibba General Cargo Terminal will be able to accommodate up to 3.6 million tonnes of general cargo annually.
Once operational, the two new developments will increase DP World’s total container handling capacity in the UAE from 19.4 million TEU to almost 22 million TEU, while significantly expanding its general cargo and ro-ro capability as well. Both of the Fujairah terminals will be connected to Jebel Ali port through DP World’s inland logistics network and will also be integrated with the Jafza free zone complex.
According to Yuvraj Narayan, Group Chief Executive Officer, DP World, “Fujairah strengthens what Jebel Ali already delivers. With Jebel Ali operating at high utilisation, this development provides the additional capacity to support long-term growth. For cargo owners, it means greater flexibility, more choice and stronger supply chain resilience.”
