
APMT Bahrain electrifies reach stacker operations
Faster cargo handling, shorter turnaround times and lower emissions are now a reality for port customers in Bahrain following the introduction of a new electric reach stacker at Khalifa bin Salman Port (KBSP).
Designed to keep cargo moving without interruption, the equipment is reported to have strengthened day-to-day reliability and supported more predictable vessel and truck flows. By replacing a diesel reach stacker with an electrically powered one, up to 12,060 kg of CO₂ emissions will be avoided each month, while maintaining high performance, according to port operator, APMT Bahrain.
Capable of handling loads of up to 45 tonnes, the new reach stacker has a 507-kWh battery that supports 10 to 12 hours of continuous operation without charging, helping avoid unplanned downtime. Dual-gun type electrical vehicle fast charging technology ensures it can reach 95% capacity in just 120 minutes, keeping equipment availability at high levels, while 360° safety cameras improve visibility, supporting safer and smoother operations.
According to APMT Bahrain, “For customers, this translates into smoother cargo flow, fewer disruptions and more reliable schedules. Reduced idle time and faster moves help optimise turnaround times, ensuring supply chains remain on track. Moreover, electrification at the terminal supports a shift towards lower-emission operations without compromising speed or reliability, so customers benefit from efficient cargo handling alongside progress towards decarbonised logistics and reporting goals.”
