DP World Cochin achieves record monthly container throughput
DP World Cochin’s International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) achieved its highest monthly throughput to date in May this year, handling 77,637 TEU. The terminal’s container volumes have over the first five months of the calendar year risen by 4% compared with the corresponding period last year., despite ongoing geopolitical challenges.
While direct origin and destination cargo volumes remained broadly stable, growth has been primarily supported by higher transshipment volumes, including cargo diverted from other ports. This has led to ICTT recording a record transshipment volume of 28,000 TEU in May.
Commenting on the milestone, Dipin Kayyath, Chief Executive Officer, Ports & Terminals, DP World Cochin, said, “This performance demonstrates our ability to thrive in dynamic market conditions, adapt to changing customer requirements and consistently deliver exceptional value through reliable and efficient operations.”
During the month, DP World Cochin successfully handled 17 additional vessel calls, maintaining smooth operations throughout, while demonstrating its ability to adapt to higher levels of demand without disruption.
In recent times. DP World Cochin has continued to invest in strengthening its infrastructure and operational capabilities to support growing trade volumes. The terminal has enhanced its power infrastructure from 3 MVA to 5 MVA, ensuring uninterrupted operations during peak demand periods. In addition, the complete electrification of yard equipment has significantly reduced emissions from cargo handling activities, supporting customers’ sustainability goals while enhancing operational efficiency.
Furthermore, DP World has developed Kerala’s first Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) at Cochin, and this is believed to be the only such facility in India co-located within a major port. The FTWZ supports EXIM trade by enabling efficient cargo consolidation, storage and distribution activities to take place.
