Gemini carriers to return to Red Sea sailings
A.P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have announced plans to adjust routing for one of their shared container services under the Gemini Cooperation, transitioning sailings through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal as security conditions allow.
The service affected is the ME11 route connecting India and the Middle East with Mediterranean markets. From mid-February, routing changes will be introduced on westbound sailings beginning with Albert Maersk and on eastbound sailings with the vessel Astrid Maersk, reflecting coordinated operational adjustments between the two carriers.
If conditions permit, both companies state they may implement similar routing changes for the AE12 and AE15 services at a later stage, potentially restoring additional traffic flows through the Red Sea corridor and Suez Canal passage.
The transition will be executed in a manner intended to minimise disruption for customers, with the partners emphasising that extensive security precautions will be undertaken. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd highlight that crew safety, vessel protection and cargo security remain the highest priority while operations resume. Both carriers will continue to monitor the regional security environment closely, with future routing decisions dependent on stability in the Red Sea and the absence of escalation in regional conflicts.
