SCCT Celebrates Major Terminal Expansion
The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) has celebrated the inauguration of a major US$ 500 million expansion project during a ceremony attended by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt. The development adds 955 m of new quay and 510,000 m² of yard space, supported by 12 quay cranes, 30 electric RTGs and more than 90 trucks. This significant upgrade increases annual capacity by 2.2 million TEU, raising SCCT’s total throughput capability to 7 million TEU a year and strengthening its role as a key Mediterranean and global transshipment hub.
Sustainability played a central role in the expansion, with the introduction of electric RTGs highlighting SCCT’s and parent company APM Terminals’ commitment to lowering emissions. Through continued investment in battery-based electric container handling equipment, renewable energy solutions and improved energy efficiency, the company is making steady progress toward its target of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
SCCT is one of eight APM Terminals hub facilities forming the backbone of the East-West network operated by A. P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The network is engineered to deliver strong schedule reliability, competitive transit times and resilient performance. According to APM Terminals, ongoing investment in SCCT has been vital in achieving these goals, adding essential transshipment capacity and enabling the deployment of advanced digital planning tools to optimise operations.
