QatarEnergy has selected Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited (Nakilat) to be the owner and operator of up to 25 new LNG carriers in accordance with time charters to be entered into by the two companies. The agreement, part of QatarEnergy’s long term fleet expansion project, is intended to cater for the LNG transportation requirements of QatarEnergy’s LNG field expansion plans, as well as its gas carrier fleet renewal needs. It is expected that other bidders and vessel owners will be announced in due course as part of this ongoing fleet development programme.
The 25 latest LNG carriers, each with a capacity of 174,000m3, will be owned 100% by Nakilat and chartered out to affiliates of QatarEnergy. All are scheduled for construction at South Korean shipyards, details of which have yet to be announced.
Commenting on the contract, His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said: “QatarEnergy is moving firmly in building its future LNG fleet, expected to be in excess of one hundred vessels. We look forward to announcing the names of additional successful bidders in the near future.”
Recently also QatarEnergy has announced that it has entered into a 20-year LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Petronet LNG Limited for the supply of 7.5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG to the Republic of India. The contracted LNG volumes from Qatar will be delivered to terminals across India onboard QatarEnergy’s LNG fleet, starting May 2028.
