
The latest IMarEST UAE branch webinar hosted jointly in Dubai and Gdansk on April 7th gave the chance for class society Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) and Info Marine to discuss the evolution of classification services and contemporary ship maintenance technology which can better manage costs and risks.
Marek Narewski, Expert Engineer and Technical Specialist, from the Gdańsk headquarters of Polish Register of Shipping (PRS), justified the requirements for performing alternative surveys of machinery onboard, in line with Class rules. He highlighted the appropriate balance that classification societies maintain in ensuring that ship owners comply with IMO regulations, while still being empathetic to the fact that ships need to operate profitably. Marek identified the primary causes of machinery failure which are addressed in PRS Rules and IACS standards relating to Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) schemes. That set the stage for Patryk Brząkała, Senior Reliability Engineer, Info Marine Middle East to present the practicalities and benefits of CBM strategies.
During these challenging times of the pandemic, remote CBM is becoming increasingly important, Patryk emphasised, providing Info Marine with crucial data that helps them develop reports with technical advice and solutions, based on which class societies may permit greater times between overhauls (TBO), reducing superfluous equipment downtime and ships’ operational costs.
Nikeel Idnani, Honorary Secretary of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology UAE branch who moderated the engaging webinar, pointed out that CBM leverages on accredited tools that provide visibility into equipment health, allowing identification in real time and prompt action on degrading conditions, leading to the safer and more reliable operation of maritime assets. Nikeel welcomed, “Smart predictive maintenance solutions which achieve operational efficiency of increasingly complex modern machinery” and said these tools were shaping the next generation of maintenance methodologies, improving maritime safety in a digital era.
