Abu Dhabi Ports has signed an agreement with digital freight platform, Transportr, to manage the latter’s inland container depot (ICD) in Musaffah. This will include providing handling facilities within the ICD and the delivery of fully inclusive transportation services for containers moving between the ICD and Khalifa Port.
The agreement is expected to not only improve connectivity between Transportr’s depot, located within Ittihad Paper Mill, and Khalifa Port, but will also help reduce container transportation costs. Transportr has already secured contracts for the movement of over 15,000 TEUs for 2021 from several leading industrial facilities and is expected to increase volumes further to over 20,000 TEU over the course of next year.
Transportr believes the ICD located in the Mussafah area will be instrumental as it moves to strengthen its digital freight marketplace operations and infrastructure and address the challenge of empty miles within the industry. Under the new contract, Abu Dhabi Ports will use its logistic capabilities to oversee inward and outward container handling at Khalifa Port, while also providing ICD-related container handling services offering shipping lines and local importers and exporters the ability to collect and offload containers within the ICD. In addition to assisting Transportr achieve greater economies of scale, the operation is expected to improve operations between the ICD and port through a shuttle service.
