King Abdullah Port on the Red Sea achieved an impressive 6.6 per cent increase in its container throughput last year, handling 2.15 million TEU, compared to 2.02 million TEU in 2019. A key factor behind the increase was a 16% upturn in the number of imported containers compared to the previous year.
With regard to bulk and general cargo, the port registered a 12.37% growth rate last year, reaching 3.32 million tons, up from 2.96 million tons in 2019.
Imports of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies witnessed a remarkable 72% increase during the first eight months of 2020. There was also a 15% increase in the imports of building materials, which helped meet the needs of Saudi Arabia’s fast growing construction sector. Moreover, the port completed the handling and transportation of 3,200 tons of heavy lift equipment for the Petro Rabigh Phase II project.
Last year, the port received three of the world’s largest containerships and was also selected as the main terminal on the Red Sea for Maersk and MSC. The port now handles services for 10 of the world’s largest shipping lines which have been attracted by its 18m draft which facilitates handling of large container vessel types.
Once fully completed, King Abdullah Port will be capable of handling 25 million TEU, 1.5 million cars and 15 million tons of dry bulk cargo annually.
