ASRY, the leading Bahrain-based shipyard, has managed to improve upon its own record by completing a retrofit of an exhaust gas scrubber system within 29 days. This enhanced performance is claimed to be one of the fastest turnarounds for a project of this type in the region and the fact that it also involved a simultaneous ballast water treatment system retrofit on the Aframax tanker, as well as silicone coating repairs, made it all the more impressive.
ASRY points out that scrubber retrofits are currently dominating maritime repair schedules due to recently implemented IMO regulations that force vessel owners to reduce sulphur emission levels.
In this case customer was the shipmanager, TMS Tankers, and the vessel being retrofitted was the 105,000dwt, 2007-built crude oil tanker, Monterey. A spokesman for the Greek company commented that yard’s preparations, by prefabricating the necessary structures in advance, was key to the vessel’s quick turnaround. “We have now chosen ASRY for several scrubber retrofits and there has been a significant improvement in redelivery times,” he added.
ASRY says the lessons learned from earlier projects have been implemented to improve overall efficiency with scrubber retrofits. This is expected to benefit future projects, of which over 12 are planned during the course of this year.
