Khalifa Port, officially inaugurated in December 2012, has celebrated its 7th anniversary by highlighting the fact that significant further port expansion is now underway. Of particular note is the investment of AED 2.2 billion in the development of South Quay and Khalifa Port Logistics, as well as the AED 1.6 billion expansion at Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT).
The South Quay development, which will be completed by the first quarter of 2021, comprises a 3km long quay with a draft of 18.5m alongside. The eight berths within the expansion will be used for general cargo, ro-ro and bulk traffic and will be supported by 1.3 million m2 of terminal yard space.
The Khalifa Logistics expansion, also set for completion early in 2021, is for multi-purpose operations. This will encompass a 3.1km quay wall with 8m draft and will provide a total of 15 berths. ADP is offering plots of land within this area which can be tailored to meet the requirements of individual customers.
The expansion at ADT will include an extension of the quay from 1,400m to 2,265 m and an addition of 10 new ship-to-shore quay cranes. This investment will effectively double ADT’s handling capacity from 2.5 to 5 million teu a year. Additionally, the investment will provide significant technological advancements, such as fully automated truck loading and discharge systems. As a result of the expansion, ADT is expected to become one of the top 40 container ports worldwide in 2010.
Once these investments have been completed Khalifa Port will see its container handling capacity jump from 5 million teu to 7.5 million teu annually. Further expansion is planned to boost this to 9 million teu a year by 2025.
Furthermore, after only one year since it started handling containers, the CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal has now moved from its trial phase to being commercially fully operational. The deepwater, semi-automated container terminal includes the largest Container Freight Station in the Middle East and makes Abu Dhabi the regional base for COSCO’s global network of 37 ports.
Naser AlBusaeedi, Deputy CEO, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal, comments: “COSCO continues to view Abu Dhabi as a logistics and trade hub of tremendous strategic global importance, as its location bridging East and West, combined with its commitment to excellence in infrastructure development, make it an international port of significance.”
