Part of the PSA International group, Chennai International Terminals Pvt Ltd (CITPL) set a new vessel productivity record for South and East India of 171 moves per hour when it completed 3023 moves in just under 19 hours on 12th September during the visit of Wan Hai 507. CITPL’s achievement surpassed the earlier South and East India record of 168 moves per hour, which was also set by CITPL in August 2016.
Capt. T. Madhan Mohan, General Manager, said, “CITPL has again raised the bar for terminal productivity in South and East India. We are also working closely alongside Chennai Port Trust to enhance the competitiveness of the port. Recent reductions in vessel related charges, increases in free time for direct port deliveries and direct port exports, the streamlining of road access, cuts in short haul rail charges by Indian Railways and the development of an empty container depot inside the port area are just some of the initiatives being taken by stakeholders towards this objective.”
Another PSA terminal in India also recently achieved a notable milestone. On 25th September, Hyundai Merchant Marine’s (HMM) first block train, making a weekly trip to Tughlakabad was launched from PSA’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT). The block train flagged off at BMCT by Sanjay Sethi, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), has a 90 TEU capacity and will connect up with HMM’s China India Express service to reduce transit times.
JNPT handled its highest ever rail throughput of 70,398 TEU in August this year, with the rail share of JNPT’s total container volumes rising to 16.2%. Like JNPT, BMCT also enjoyed a record month for rail volumes in August, following the signing of a new rail agreement between the various terminal operators in the port. Mike Formosa, Managing Director, PSA India, says, “The resolution of the Inter Terminal Rail Handling Operation (ITRHO) agreement by JNPT is certainly a factor in not only higher volumes but also increased competitiveness through improved rail connectivity at JNPT. PSA India intends to continue to play a key role in contributing to JNPT’s attractiveness as a port of call.”
