The Maritime Standard published on July 15th this year is the 100th edition of the online newsletter. The first issue was published in June 2014, and from the beginning TMS set out to meet the shipping industry’s need for fast, accurate information about developments in ports and shipping related businesses in the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent.
In the four years since its inception TMS has grown to become a market leading brand in the region, and one with a global reputation. The newsletter has earned respect as a source of accurate news and the market benefits greatly from the information it gathers together and distributes.
Back in 2014, TMS hit the ground running. The first issue was delivered to around 18,000 top executives. The database has been expanded over 5 years, making it the No. 1 shipping newsletter in the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent region. These readers are based not only in the region, but also worldwide including hubs such as Singapore, London, Oslo, Hamburg and Piraeus.
The 100th edition milestone has been recognised in the industry and a number of senior executives have sent messages of support.

As TMS has grown in popularity as a brand, other related services have been developed. The market leading TMS Awards were first staged in 2014 and are now accepted as the region’s finest maritime awards gala event, attracting over 700 top executives from across the world. The Awards will be staged for the 5th time this year on October 15th at The Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai.
The Ship Finance and Trade Conference was launched in 2015 and is being held for the fourth time in Abu Dhabi in November this year. It has gone from strength to strength and TMS has been privileged to work closely with Abu Dhabi Ports on this project. This year’s event will feature key names in the shipping, maritime, legal, financial and banking sectors.
In 2016 the first TMS Tanker Conference was staged. This will be held again, for the third time, in 2018, with the venue changing to the Atlantis, to cater for increased demand. It is estimated that 90% of the region’s tanker trade will be represented at the event, which takes place in October, the day after the Awards. The Conference has attracted keen interest from Intertanko and the industry association’s chairman, Nikos Tsakos, will be a keynote speaker this year. Other participants include high level representatives from Bahri, KOTC, Oman Shipping, Gulf Navigation, Emarat Maritime, ADNOC, among others.
Another project that was launched in 2016 was the UAE Yearbook. The most high profile and well circulated product dedicated to charting the development of the UAE maritime sector, the third edition of the yearbook is due for publication shortly. The local launch is scheduled for August and the international launch at SMM in Hamburg this September.

Trevor Pereira, managing director, The Maritime Standard says, “It has been quite a journey over the last four years and I am grateful for the support from the industry that has allowed us to reach this 100 edition milestone. The success of the newsletter, the conferences, awards and yearbook, would not have been possible without the industry’s active support.”The intention is for the TMS newsletter to grow and develop, with more features and more in-depth analysis. Trevor adds, “We are not going to stand still. Our portfolio will see more additions and we are excited as we start the countdown to our next 100 editions.”
