Amongst the 2017 highlights for Gulftainer, the Sharjah-based container terminal operator, was the performance of its Jubail Container Terminal business in Saudi Arabia. The facility handled more than 680,000 teu last year, over 20% up on 2016 levels, with traffic related to the region’s petrochemical plants driving up volume.
JCT also recorded its highest ever monthly throughput of 79,074 teu in August 2017, while another key milestone was the arrival last November of Evergreen’s EMC Taurus, which at 14,424 teu was the largest containership to call at the terminal to date.
To keep pace with the anticipated growth, GSCCO has recently deployed three additional rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes at JCT. Their arrival will help boost the capacity of the terminal and maintain productivity rates.
Speaking about these achievements, Richard James, managing director of GSCCO, said: “The milestones we have achieved at JCT are an indication of our commitment to consistently delivering best-in-class performance. The Jubail port remains a key gateway for incoming and outgoing container traffic in the burgeoning Saudi market.”
JCT has five berths, totalling 1300m in length, with a draft alongside of 15m, and is equipped with five quayside gantry cranes. Total annual throughput capacity is around 800,000 teu. In addition to JCT, GSCCO also operates the Jubail Industrial Port (JIP) and the Northern Container Terminal (NCT) in Jeddah within its Saudi Arabian ports portfolio.
