Continuing its work to give the region’s maritime and legal communities the opportunity to learn more about arbitration, the Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (EMAC) hosted its ninth and last Breakfast with EMAC seminar for the year on 12the December at its offices in DIFC.
This final session of the popular seminar series, launched earlier in 2017, featured an opening presentation by Dr. David Galea, Head of Legal and Company Secretary of Drydocks World, and special guest speaker Natasha Bakirci, Assistant Registrar, DIFC Courts, who set out guidelines to enforcement at the DIFC courts.
With arbitration a viable alternative for litigation in resolving disputes across international jurisdictions, it is important for those working in the maritime sector to have an understanding of the steps which need to be taken to ensure the awards are enforced correctly, explained Majid Obaid bin Bashir, Acting Chairman and Secretary General, EMAC.
“While arbitral awards can be enforced internationally, in view of EMAC arbitration rules using DIFC as the default jurisdiction, we believe it is important to raise awareness on the procedures for enforcement through DIFC court,” said Mr. bin Bashir “Throughout 2017 we have been committed to providing the region’s legal and maritime sectors with as many opportunities as possible to learn more about the legal and maritime sectors and the role of arbitration. We are honoured to have representatives from the DIFC courts to provide guidelines on enforcement at the DIFC courts.”
Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (EMAC) was established in accordance with Emiri decree No. 14/2016 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, in April 2016, with a formal launch of its services in November of the same year. Initially based out of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), EMAC has its own legal identity and is financially and administratively independent.
The first specialised maritime arbitration centre to be established in the MENA region, EMAC works with organisations across the region, providing services for resolving maritime disputes, through arbitration, mediation and other dispute resolution processes.
