Hapag-Lloyd has confirmed that it will now carry out the capital increase that was agreed upon as part of the merger of Hapag-Lloyd and UASC. The gross proceeds are expected to amount to approximately € 352 million (US$ 414 million).
“Following the successful merger with UASC, we will use the capital increase to strengthen our capital structure and to use the proceeds to reduce the leverage of the company. This enables us to focus on enhancing our strategic and operating objectives,” explained Rolf Habben Jansen, chief executive of Hapag-Lloyd.
Meanwhile on September 28th the last of a series of 17 large container vessels originally ordered by UASC was handed over to Hapag-Lloyd. The 15,000 teu capacity Al Jmeliyah was delivered by the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) shipyard in South Korea.
The series, ordered in 2013, comprised of eleven 15,000 teu and six 19,900 teu ships, the first of which was delivered in 2015. Following the merger with Hapag-Lloyd at the end of May this year, these vessels are now all part of the German-based carrier’s fleet, which currently consists of 219 ships, making it the fifth largest liner shipping company in the world.
Al Jmeliyah is to operate on the FE4 service of The Alliance between Asia and Northern Europe, along with its predecessor, Afif, which was delivered in July. Its name means “the beautiful one” in Arabic.
