Plans to explore the possibility of a major expansion in the northern part of the UAE have been announced by Gulf Navigation Holding. This initiative – the so called GNH Northern Project – includes possible diversification into shipbuilding, ship repair, offshore rig maintenance, mobile and onboard ship repair and logistics.
According to the Dubai-based shipping company, the level of activity at the Fujairah anchorage, with around 550 vessels a month stopping for ship supplies and refueling, creates considerable potential scope for an enlarged repair and related maritime services business. Gulf Navigation intends to tap into this potential and has teamed up with two Chinese companies, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry, both of which are members of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) group, in the GNH Northern Project.
The consortium has started to review and finalise plans for the project which will be developed in three phases, the first of which will include the acquisition of a floating dock facility and the acquisition of mobile cranes capable of working on vessels and offshore platforms. The joint project team will be led by Eng. Omar Abu Omar, president, marine and operations, Gulf Navigation, and Yan Jingliang, vice president, Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry.
