Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) has taken delivery of its second bulk carrier, Ceylon Princess, at Colombo port. Constructed in China at the Avica International yard in Weihei, the 63,000 dwt, 200m long bulker is identical to sister ship, Ceylon Breeze, which was delivered in March this year.
The main purpose of CSC acquiring these new ships is to transport coal to the Puttalam Lakvijaya Power Station. The original plan was to deploy both these ships for coal transportation year round, with the commencement of another project at Sampur that also required servicing with coal imports. However, as there are said to be “certain uncertainties” with regard to the Sampur project, these two bulk vessels will now be employed elsewhere during the Monsoon period. CSC has entered into a commercial management agreement with Hong Kong-based Wallem Commercial Services to secure further employment for the bulk carriers.
Already the vessel has been used on its delivery voyage to carry steel from South Korea to the Philippine, as well as a shipment of 61,186 tonnes of coal required for Puttalam Lakvijaya from South Africa.
The vessel arrived at Colombo on its maiden voyage on 5th October, and was welcomed in a special ceremony by the Hon. Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga and Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigama. Ceylon Princess features a specially built deck for the training of 26 marine cadets at any given time, as does Ceylon Breeze.
