Ananda Senanayaka, Executive Director of Lanka Shipping & Logistics, was very excited to be awarded the Maritime Standard Young Person in Shipping Award, describing it as “one of the highlights of my career so far.”
Ananda joined the investment banking industry straight out of university but was eventually enticed to join the company his father started in Sri Lanka in 2010. He says, “My father had immense experience in the shipping field after working for 15 years in Dubai. My youth was spent following him to the office and listening to all the shipping lingo.”
But it was in 2013 that his father asked him if he would join him in Sri Lanka to help with the company’s growth. Ananda says, “I was hesitant at first due to my limited knowledge of the shipping and maritime field; however, I soon decided that this was the change I needed after six years in investment banking.”
He continues, “The first year was probably the toughest as I was finding my feet, but from 2015 Lanka Shipping took off with significant growth in the logistics and ship agency business. I completed my Chartered Ship Broking exams in 2018 and was then ready to put my knowledge to test.”
Coming to 2019, he says he has a lot of passion for shipping and aims to continue for many more years to come. “I absolutely love what I do and wouldn’t have it any other way.” The company currently has over a 100 staff and multiple offices in Sri Lanka as well as its first overseas office, which is opening in the Maldives in December 2019.
Ananda concludes, “I am truly grateful for this award from The Maritime Standard. I am eagerly awaiting the new challenges 2020 will pose for the shipping and maritime and ready to roll up my sleeves and continue our growth.”
