The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Aisha Al Busmait, Director of Government Communications at the Federal Transport Authority (FTA) – Land & Maritime, as IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador. The announcement took place in the presence of H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and FTA Chairman, as well as several ministers and representative members of the IMO on World Maritime Day.
Dr. Al Nuaimi said: “The appointment underscores our wise leadership’s continuous support to empower women and involve them in all developmental sectors as an active contributor in the process of development and progress of the country. We congratulate Dr. Aisha for the high level of confidence given by the IMO, and we appreciate her dedication to raise the profile of Emirati women to enable them to participate in all fields of work, especially in maritime.”
He added: “We remain committed to empower women in the maritime sector, increase their presence and provide them with the right opportunities to further develop their careers.”
In her role as IMO ambassador, Dr Al Bushmait is tasked with spreading awareness among young men and women about the maritime sector’s importance and contribution. The role also focuses on intensifying efforts to encourage young people in schools and universities to engage in the maritime sector through their academic studies or consider working within it.
The FTA took part in the activities of World Maritime Day held in London under the theme ‘Empowering Women in the Maritime Community.’ This year’s celebration promoted gender equality in the maritime sector in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event also provided industry stakeholders with a platform to discuss collaborative efforts to promote higher female participation in different aspects of the maritime sector.
