RAK Ports is at present primarily focused on cargo operations and has a strong position in the regional dry bulk sector especially. However the organisation believes its facilities offer scope to attract cruise liner calls and has welcomed the decision of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) to appoint ISS Cruise Solutions as a cruise tourism consultant.
Working with Inchcape Shipping Services, RAKTDA and RAK Ports plan to attract calls by specialised luxury cruise ships to the emirate during 2018. RAK Ports is currently upgrading its city centre terminal facilities and will be in a position to berth cruise vessels of up to 214m in length from February 2018. ISS believes there is scope for RAK Ports to become a new cruise destination within the Gulf region, with a particular focus on high end, luxury cruising.
